Question

300 g of coconut oil at 50C is mixed with 500 g kerosene at 10C. Determine the temperature of the mixture. (Specific heat of coconut oil = 2100 J kg1 K1 and specific heat of kerosene = 2000 J kg1 K1.

Solution

Given:
Mass of coconut oil, mC=300 g=0.3 kg.
Mass of kerosene, mK=500 g=0.5 kg.
Specific heat of coconut oil, SC=2100 J/kg K.
Specific heat of kerosene , SK=2000 J/kg K
Temperature of coconut oil, TC=50C and
Temperature of kerosene, TK=10C.
Let the temperature of the final mixture be Tm
We know that, heat lost by coconut oil = heat gained by kerosene
mCSC(TCTm)=mKSK(TmTK)

0.3×2100×(50Tm)=0.5×2000×(Tm10)

Tm=25.46C.
