Streptococcus pneumoniae, a Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria is the common cause of pneumonia which is an inflammatory lung infection. These bacteria enter the lungs while breathing and settle in the alveoli. As they multiply the body's white blood cells respond to the agent and results in the production of fluid in the lungs. Hence, the alveoli become filled with fluid and pus. This condition is called pneumonia. Its symptoms are cough, tinged mucus, shortening of breath, chest pain, nausea and vomiting.
