Solution

Washing soda (Na2CO3)

  • Washing soda is used to remove permanent hardness of water.
  • Washing soda reacts with Calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) in water to generate (CaCO3) and Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3) respectively .
  • These carbonates are insoluble in water and must be filtered to be separated.

CaSO4(aq)Calciumsulphate+Na2CO3(s)SodiumCarbonate(Washingsoda)CaCO3(s)CalciumCarbonate(insolublesalt)+2Na2SO4(aq)SodiumSulphate

MgSO4(aq)Magnesiumsulphate+Na2CO3(s)SodiumCarbonate(Washingsoda)MgCO3(s)MagnesiumCarbonate(insolublesalt)+2Na2SO4(aq)SodiumSulphate
