Solution

Glass: It is a supercooled liquid which is a mixture of limestone or Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), soda ash or Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and sand (SiO2)

Glass is of various types:

Coloured glass: The glass which has some colours in it is called coloured glass.

  • Coloured glass is made by adding a small quantity of metallic oxides to the mixture of components of ordinary glass.
  • Example: The addition of Nickel oxide (NiO) gives violet colour to the glass whereas the addition of Chromic oxide (Cr2O3) imparts emerald green colour to the glass.
  • It is used to make decorative items, sunglasses etc.

Pyrex glass: It is a heat resistant variety of glass.

  • It is used to manufacture equipment for laboratories and utensils meant for use in ovens and microwaves.
  • It is made up of a material called borosilicate which does not break on abrupt temperature changes.

Safety glass: Glass that shatters to a lesser extent than ordinary glass and provides safety against damage.

  • Example: Toughened glass, Laminated glass.

Laminated glass: Laminated glass is formed by sandwiching a layer of the plastic sheet between two layers of glass.

  • This allows all the broken pieces of glass to stay together even when it is hit.
  • It is also known as bulletproof glass. It is mainly used in aeroplanes and windshields of cars.

Optical glass: It is used to make optical instruments like lenses, prisms etc.

Photochromatic glass: The type of glass that acquires darker colour on exposure to intense light (Ultraviolet radiation) and returns to normal shade in less intense light. Example: Used to make sunglasses.

Lead crystal glass: It has a high refractive index that causes the glass to sparkle when light falls on it. Example: Used to make expensive art decorative pieces.
