Trypanosoma:

  1. All members belonging to the zooflagellate, protozoan Trypanosoma genus are called trypanosomes.
  2. It is caused by Trypanosoma brucei.
  3. They are also obligatory parasites, meaning that they require at least one host to complete their general life cycle.

Morphology and Life Cycle:

  1. They are unicellular, parasitic & flagellated protozoans.
  2. The mitochondrial genome of these trypanosomes is known as kinetoplast DNA or kDNA.
  3. It is made up of catenated circles & minicircles and requires a different set of proteins during cell division.
  4. The salivarian species develops in the anterior gut of the Tsetse fly & is transmitted to the host by insect feed.
  5. The trypanosomes generally undergo a series of morphological changes during their transition from invertebrates to vertebrates.
