Question

Name a gas which is always produced when a reactive metal reacts with a dilute acid. Write a chemical equation supporting your answer.

Solution

Hydrogen gas (H2) is produced as a byproduct when dilute acids(H2SO4,HCl) reacts with reactive metals such as Alkaline metal or Alkaline earth metal (Mg,Al,Zn...)

For example:

Reaction of Sodium (Na) with Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Hydrogen gas (H2) is produced as a byproduct. Chemical reaction is as follows.

2Na(s)Sodium+2HCl(aq)Hydrochloricacid2NaCl(s)Sodiumchloride+H2(g)Hydrogen

When Aluminium (Al) reacts with dilute Sulphuric acid (H2SO4), Hydrogen gas (H2) is produced as a byproduct. Chemical reaction is as follows.

Al(s)Aluminium+2H2SO4(aq)SulphuricacidAl2(SO4)3(sAluminiumsulphate)+3H2(gHydrogen)
