Name a hormone that influences BP?

Open in App
Solution

Aldosterone:

  1. Aldosterone is a steroid hormone secreted in the outer section (cortex) of the adrenal glands, found above the kidneys.
  2. The release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands is regulated through the renin-angiotensin II-aldosterone system.
  3. It is mainly involved in regulating the water and salt level in the body and hence has an effect on blood pressure.
  4. In response to decreased glomerular blood flow, juxtaglomerular cells release renin.
  5. It converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, which is then converted to angiotensin II.
  6. Angiotensin II is a vasodilator that raises blood pressure.
  7. Angiotensin II stimulates the adrenal cortex's secretion of aldosterone.
  8. Aldosterone increases blood pressure by causing water and sodium ion reabsorption from the renal tubules.
