Question

Name a hydrocarbon which will form a red precipitate with ammoniacal solution of copper (I) chloride

Open in App
Solution

When Ammoniacal solution of Copper (I) Chloride is added to Ethyne then it gives red precipitates.

But when an Ammoniacal solution of Copper (I) Chloride is added to Ethene, no reaction occurs and no precipitate is obtained. Hence Ammoniacal solution of Copper (I) Chloride CuCl is used to distinguish between Ethyne (C2H2) and Ethene (C2H4).

So, Ethyne is a hydrocarbon that will form a red precipitate with an Ammoniacal solution of Copper (I) Chloride
