Question

Name a metal which reacts with very dilute nitric acid to liberate hydrogen.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Nitric acid (HNO3) in its concentrated form is considered as a strong oxidising agent as a result it oxidises hydrogen immediately to form water.
  2. But dilute Nitric acid (HNO3) on reacting with Magnesium (Mg) metal gives Hydrogen (H2).
  3. The reaction is shown below.
    Mg(s)+2HNO3(aq)ā†’Mg(NO3)2(aq)+H2(g)MagnesiumNitricMagnesiumHydrogenacidnitrate
  4. In the given reaction, Magnesium (Mg) reacts with a dilute solution of Nitric acid (HNO3) to give Magnesium nitrate (Mg(NO3)2) and Hydrogen (H2) as a product.
  5. Therefore, a metal which reacts with very dilute Nitric acid (HNO3) to liberate hydrogen (H2) is Magnesium (Mg).
