Accessory glands of the male reproductive system:

  1. The male reproductive system consists of three accessory glands which are prostate gland, seminal vesicles, and bulbourethral gland.
  2. They secrete various fluids that provide the sperm with a suitable environment for growth and maturation.

Prostate gland:

  1. The prostate gland is located beneath the urinary bladder in front of the rectum.
  2. It secretes a milky, alkaline, and thick fluid making 20-30% of the semen volume.
  3. The prostate gland also helps in the regulation of the flow of urine.

Seminal vesicles:

  1. A pair of seminal vesicles are located between the urinary bladder and the rectum.
  2. It secretes the fluid containing fructose and other enzymes making up for the majority of the semen.
  3. The seminal fluid helps in the transportation, motility, and fertilization ability of the sperms.

Bulbourethral gland:

  1. A pair of a bulbourethral gland or Cowper's gland is present at the base of the penis.
  2. The secretions of cowper's gland help in neutralization of the pH and lubricate the urethra.
