Solution

An acid is a substance in which the only positive ion is hydrogen. For example, Sulfuric acid H2SO4 and Hydrochloride acid HCl.

Since, many bacteria cannot thrive in an acidic environment, Citric acid C6H8O7 is commonly used to preserve jams, jellies, and some other foods.

Therefore, citric acid is utilized for the preservation of food.
