Classification of Industries:

1. On basis of raw material:
(a) Agro based-
They use plant and animal based products as their raw materials.Eg. Cotton textile industry.
(b) Mineral baesd- They use mineral ores as their raw materials. Eg.Iron industry
(c) Marine based- These industries use sea and ocean products as raw materials. Eg.Fish oil manufacturing industry.
(d) Forest based - It uses forest produce as raw materials.Eg.paper industry

2. On basis of ownership-
(a) Private ownership- Where ownership is in hands of individuals or group of individuals.Eg. Reliance
(b) Public ownership- Industries which are owned and operated by the government. eg. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
(c) Joint sector - Industries that are owned and operated by the state and individuals or a group of individuals.Eg. Maruti Udyog
(d) Co-operative sector- Industries which are owned and operated by the producers or suppliers of raw materials, workers or both. Eg. Amul

3. On the basis of size:
(a) Small scale-
Industries where lesser amount of capital and technology is used. eg. Handicraft industry
(b) Large scale- Industries where large amount of capital and technology is used. Eg.Automobile industry.
