Solution

  1. The ability to do work is called energy.
  2. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another form.
  3. Energy exists in many forms in nature, such as:

a) Mechanical energy:

  1. Mechanical energy is the energy possessed by a body due to its position or motion.
  2. It is the energy possessed by a body when it is in motion or it is lifted to a height with respect to the earth's surface.
  3. Mechanical energy is of two types; kinetic energy and potential energy.
  4. The energy possessed by a body due to its state of motion is called kinetic energy, for example, a running boy.
  5. The energy possessed by a body due to its position or change in shape is called potential energy, for example; a stone on a cliff, etc.

b) Energy in action:

  1. Heat Energy: Heat energy is a form of energy that is responsible for the sensation of hotness or coldness.
  2. Light energy: Light energy is a form of energy that helps us to see objects.
  3. Sound energy: Sound energy is a form of energy produced by a vibrating body.
  4. Electrical energy: The energy produced by the flow of electric charges through a conductor is known as electrical energy.

c) Stored Energy:

  1. Muscular energy: The energy stored in the muscles of our body is called muscular energy.
  2. Chemical energy: Chemical energy refers to the energy that is stored in molecular bonds, the force that holds the molecules together.
  3. Magnetic energy: The energy stored in a magnet due to which it exerts a force on the magnetic material and a magnet is known as magnetic energy.
  4. Nuclear energy: The energy stored in the nucleus of an atom is called nuclear energy.
