Insectivorous plants:

  1. Plants that feed on the insects for their nutrition are called insectivorous plants.
  2. Insectivorous plants generally grow in a nutrient-deficient soil and hence it needs the nutrients from the insects.
  3. The leaves are modified to form traps where the plant traps and digests the insects.
  4. Common examples of insectivorous plants are venus flytrap, pitcher plant, bladderwort, etc.

Venus flytrap:

  1. Leaves are modified where leaf lamina forms two parts, midrib acts like a hinge and contains hair-like projections from the edges.
  2. It traps the insect and digests in the presence of digestive enzymes released inside the modified leaf.

Pitcher plant:

  1. The leaf is modified to form a pitcher while the apical region develops into a lid.
  2. As the insect enters the pitcher, the lid closes trapping the insect inside and finally digesting it.

Bladderwort:

  1. Leaves are segmented and modified to form bladders.
  2. As the small insects enter the bladder, it is unable to leave and gets digested.
