Air pollution is defined as the release of pollutants into the atmosphere that is harmful to human health and the environment as a whole.
The three major sources of air pollution are:
Untreated exhaust and fumes from the factories- In the chemical and mining industries, industrial operations and solvent consumption pollute the air. Coal-fired power facilities are a major source of pollution, while diesel generators are becoming more prevalent in off-grid areas.
Smoke from vehicles- The worldwide transportation industry (automobiles) is responsible for over a quarter of all energy-related carbon dioxide emissions.
Untreated fumes from radioactive power plants.
Agricultural waste- Livestock which creates methane and ammonia and the burning of agricultural waste are two main causes of air pollution from agriculture. Ground-level ozone, which causes asthma and other respiratory ailments, is caused by methane emissions. Methane is also a stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
