Accessory glands:

  1. The male accessory glands are part of the male reproductive system.
  2. The functions of male accessory glands are: To help in the motility of sperm. Provide nutrients and activates the sperms.

Two accessory glands present in males are the prostate gland and the seminal vesicle.

Prostate gland:

  1. A bilobed structure that surrounds the urethra close to its origin from the bladder.
  2. It pours an alkaline secretion into the semen as it passes through the urethra.
  3. It is situated around the anterior end of the urethra.
  4. The prostate gland secretes a white fluid, which forms 25 to 30 percent of semen.
  5. The fluid contains Phosphate, lysozymes, spermin, citrate, fibrinolysin, etc.
  6. Its secretions activate the sperms and prevent the semen from coagulating.

Seminal vesicle:

  1. The seminal vesicle is the accessory gland in human males whose secretion activates the sperms.
  2. It is also called the uterus masculine.
  3. There is only one pair of Seminal vesicles in man.
  4. It consists of fructose, ascorbic acid, prostaglandin, and enzymes.
  5. Fructose functions by providing energy.
  6. The secretions of the seminal vesicles are alkaline and slimy and their pH is about 7.4.
