Question

Name different types of epithelial tissues and give functions of each of them.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Epithelial tissues form continuous sheets of cells which are closely packed. There are no intercellular spaces in epithelial tissue.
  2. Epithelial tissues cover the external surface of the body (skin) and body organs. They also line the cavities of hollow internal organs.
  3. Depending upon the cell shapes and their functions, epithelial tissues are mainly classified as:
    • Squamous epithelium
    • Cuboidal epithelium
    • Columnar epithelium
    • Ciliated epithelium
    • Glandular epithelium
    • Sensory epithelium
  4. Squamous epithelium: Its function is to protect the underlying parts from mechanical injuries and prevent the passage of germ, chemicals, and drying.
  5. Cuboidal epithelium: Its main functions are secretion and absorption. Formation of gametes in ovaries and testes.
  6. Columnar epithelium: Its main functions are secretion and absorption.
  7. Ciliated epithelium: Ciliated epithelial cells possess cilia on the surface. Cilia help in the movement of substances forward like mucus.
  8. Glandular epithelium: It secretes digestive juices, oil (sebum), tears, and milk in females.
  9. Sensory epithelium: It collects sensory stimuli.
