There are 2 main categories of WBCs.
  • Granulocytes, which are further classified into 3 different types:
  1. Neutrophils - These are phagocytic cells which destroy foreign organisms entering the body and comprise of 60-65% of WBCs.
  2. Eosinophils - These resist infections and are associated with allergic reactions. It comprises 2-3% of WBCs.
  3. Basophils - These are the least (0.5-1%) among WBCs and are involved in inflammatory reactions.
  • Agranulocytes, which are further divided into 2 types:
  1. Monocytes - These are also phagocytic cells which destroy foreign organisms entering the body and comprise of 6-8% of WBCs.
  2. Lymphocytes - These are responsible for immune responses of the body and are comprised of 20-25% of WBCs.
