Photoreceptor cells:

  1. Specialized retina cells that can convert light to signals sent to the brain.
  2. They give us color vision and night vision.
  3. There are two types of photoreceptor cells found in the eye: Rod and Cone cells.

The name of the cells of the retina and their respective pigments which get activated (1) in the dark and (2) in light are:

  1. The Rod cells of the retina have rhodopsin or visual purple pigment, which gets activated in the dark. (night vision)
  2. The Cone cells of the retina have iodopsin or visual violet pigment, which gets activated in light (color vision).
