Name one chemical compound which is produced by using the chemical effect of electric current.
Electroplating is one of the applications of chemical effects of electric current.
Chrome plated objects are very shiny and attractive. The silvery metal used is called chromium (one of the transition metals). It protects iron or steel objects from rusting. The chromium doesn't stick very well to iron so a layer of copper is plated on first of all. This is followed by a layer of nickel and then the final plating of chromium.
The electroplating reaction at the cathode is described by the following half-equation:
Cr+3 (aq) + 3 e−
Cr+3(aq) + 3 e− Cr (s)
