For the majority of people in India, rice is the staple food crop.

Rice

  • Rice is grown in the deltaic region of India, coastal areas of India, North and North Eastern part of India.
  • Rice is also grown in areas having lesser rainfall, such as, Western Uttar Pradesh, parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab. This has become a possibility due to the extensive network of tubewells and canal irrigation.
  • The conditions required for growing rice are annual rainfall of more than 100 cm, high humidity, and high temperature (above 25 degree celsius).
  • In areas where there is less rainfall, irrigation facilities are used for growing rice.
  • After China, India is the second largest producer of rice in the world.
