Solution

Types of matter in the central nervous system:

  1. The gray and the white matter constitute the brain and spinal cord of the central nervous system.
  2. The gray matter refers to the cell bodies or soma of the neurons along with their dendrites.
  3. The white matter refers to the axons that are covered by the myelin sheath.
  4. In the case of the spinal cord, the white matter is located in the exterior while the gray matter is in the interior, and in the case of the brain, this location is reversed.

Hence, the two types of matter present in the brain and spinal cords are gray and white matter.
