Question

Name spectral series of hydrogen which lies in the ultraviolet

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen spectrum

  • The spectrum emitted by atomic hydrogen has been divided into several spectral series with different wavelengths.
  • Hydrogen spectrum shows quantization of energy.
  • It results in the emission of electromagnetic radiation initiated by the energetically excited hydrogen atoms.

On the basis of wavelength.

  • When a photon is emitted through a hydrogen atom, the electron undergoes a transition from a higher energy level to a lower energy level.
  • Bases on the transition hydrogen spectra are named as:
  1. Transition from the first shell to any other shell lies in ultraviolet region– Lyman series
  2. Transition from the second shell to any other shell lies in visible region– Balmer series
  3. Transition from the third shell to any other shell near Infrared – Paschen series
  4. Transition from the fourth shell to any other shell far IR– Bracket series
  5. Transition from the fifth shell to any other shell far IR.– Pfund series

Thus, the spectral series of hydrogen which lies in the ultraviolet is Lyman series.
