Question

Name the acid which should not be used for the preparation of hydrogen.

Solution

Nitric acid is not used in the preparation of hydrogen because it is a strong oxidizing agent (even in its dilute form) and oxidizes hydrogen gas to convert it into water. Dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid does not oxidizes hydrogen into water hence they are preferred for the preparation of hydrogen gas
