There is a large gap between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This gap is occupied by a large number of small bodies that revolve around the sun. These bodies are called asteroids. They are large rocks flying around sun but they are not big enough to be called a planet.Hence asteroids have failed to assemble into a planet.
