Emperor Akbar, after conquering Chittor and Ranthambore, decided to shift the capital from Agra to Sikri ridge to honour Salim Chisti, a Sufi saint. He constructed palaces, courts, mosques, quarters and other buildings for public use. He named the city ‘Fatehpur Sikri’. Fateh means victorious and Sikri refers to the Sufi saint.
