The Pallavas came to light as a formidable power in the South around the 4th century AD. Their power was at the peak during this century. They were able to endure their rule for about 500 years. They built and developed great cities, centres of learning, temples, and sculptures and influenced a large part of Southeast Asia in culture.
At the end of the 6th century, the Tamil country was divided into two. Namely the Pallavas and the Pandyas. Pallavas in the north with Kanchipuram as their capital, and Pandyas in the south with Madurai as their capital. Hence, Kanchipuram was the capital of the Pallav dynasty.
Simha Vishnu is considered as the greatest ruler of the Pallavas. He put an end to the political disturbances created by Kalabhras. The Land up to Kaveri was acquired by him.
