Question

Name the cations formed during electrolysis of water.

Open in App
Solution

Ions - ions are electrically charged atoms or a group of atoms. They are of two types cations and anions.

Cations are positively charged ions. Example- hydrogen ions (H+). They moved towards the cathode.

Anions are negatively charged ions. Example-Oxygen ions (O-). They move towards the anode.

  • Cathode is connected to the negative terminal and anode to the positive terminal of the battery.
  • When an electric current is passed through the water, water splits into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • Bubbles of hydrogen gas get collected at the cathode and oxygen at the anode.
  • Hydrogen and oxygen gas gets collected in the 2:1 by volume.

The cations formed during the electrolysis of water is hydrogen ion.
