Human Heart

The heart is a muscular organ of our body whose main function is to pump blood throughout the body with the help of blood vessels. It is the main pumping organ. The heart is located in the mediastinum i.e. in the thoracic cavity between the lungs and tilted slightly to the left.

Chambers

The heart is protected by a double-layered pericardium and is of four-chambers:

  • There are two upper chambers called atria or auricles (Left atrium and Right atrium)
  • There are two lower chambers called ventricles. (Left ventricle and Right ventricle)
