Solution

Displacement reaction

  1. A reaction in which the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule is called displacement reaction.
  2. A single displacement reaction occurs when one element in a compound is replaced by another.
  3. In displacement reaction a metal only substitutes for metal, and a non-metal only substitutes for a non-metal.
  4. More reactive elements displaces less reactive element.
  5. Representation of displacement reaction

A+B-CA-C+B

The above equation exists when A is more reactive than B.

A and B can be either:

  • Halogens where C indicates a cation.
  • Different metals wherein C indicates an anion.

From chemical reaction given below,

Fe(s)Iron+CuSO4(aq)CoppersulphateFeSO4(aq)Ironsulphate+Cu(s)Copper

From the given reaction , we can say that, when the iron is added to a copper sulphate solution, it displaces the copper metal to form ferrous sulphate. Thus, it is a Displacement reaction.
