Name the compound added to pure alumina to lower the fusion temperature during the electrolytic of alumina.

  • For the extraction of pure Aluminium two steps are followed: Baeyer’s Process and Hall-Heroult’s Process.
  • In the Hall-Heroult’s process, the electrolytic reduction of alumina takes place.
  • The melting point of the alumina is very high that is 2000°C, so in order to lower it CRYOLITE is added to it.
  • Cryolite Na3AlF6decreases the melting point of alumina to 900-950°C.
  • It also makes the alumina a good conductor of electricity.
