Name the content of Carbon in pig iron.

Open in App
Solution

Pig iron:

  1. Pig iron, also known as crude iron, is a byproduct of the iron industry made by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace and used to make steel.
  2. It can't be used right away because it's too raw, and it needs to be melted down to eliminate impurities like coke, sinter, lime, and other contaminants.
  3. It contains a high percentage of carbon (3.5-4.5%), as well as minor amounts of manganese, sulfur, silicon, and phosphorus.
  4. Because of its high carbon concentration, it is extremely brittle and only has a few applications as a material.
  5. It has poor mechanical qualities, making it unsuitable for final products.
  6. It is used to make statues or other decorative items.
  7. Construction, aviation, automobile, and shipbuilding are among the industries where it is used.

Therefore, the content of carbon present in pig iron is 3.5-4.5%
