Solution

Vegetative propagation:

The asexual reproduction mode in which the new plant arises from the vegetative parts of the plant, such as stem, root, or leaves, is called vegetative propagation.

Different types of vegetative propagation methods:

The natural processes of vegetative propagation:

The plants reproduce naturally via vegetative parts such as stem, leaves, and roots, called natural vegetative propagation. For example, Bryophyllum leaves develop platelets on the edge of the leaves, which grows into a new plant.

The artificial method of vegetative propagation:

  1. Layering: Layering is a vegetative propagation technique in which modified stem structures give rise to the roots developing into a new plant. The shoot is partially attached to the mother plant. The plant with a flexible stem is suitable for layering. Grapevine, climbing roses, and boxwood are some plants used for layering techniques.
  2. Grafting: The plant propagation technique in which the stem part of one plant is fused with a part of another plant to form another variety is called grafting. Apple, pear, mango, and many citrus fruits are suitable for grafting.
  3. Cutting: A plant propagation technique in which a portion of the vegetative part of the plant is taken and planted in the soil is called cutting. Rose, sugar cane and pineapple are suitable for this method.
