In recorded history, the Greek philosophers Leucippus and Democritus discovered the existence of the atom.

It was considered that if a piece of the matter was cut into smaller and smaller portions then the process would reach a point where that matter could not be divided into finer or smaller pieces.

He called these indivisible pieces or basic units as atoms.
