Deficiency disease:

  1. The disease which are caused due to the lack of essential nutrients in our diet are known as deficiency disease.
  2. These disease results due to the lack of sufficient amount of essential nutrients in our body in correct proportion.
  3. Example :Rickets- It causes due to lack of vitamin D, Anaemia- It causes due to lack of iron.

(a) Iodine

  1. The disease which is caused due to the deficiency of iodine is known as Goiter. This disease affects the thyroid glands present in the neck in adults and also shows mental disability and dwarfism in children.
  2. Consumption of iodized salt and sea food that are rich in iodine can help to some extent.

(b) Calcium

  1. The disease which is caused due to the deficiency of calcium is called osteoporosis in adults and rickets in children.
  2. The symptoms of this disease are weak bones and teeth. It can also lead to bow legs.
  3. Consumption of dairy products such as milk, cheese along with eggs and green leafy vegetables can help to some extent.


(c) Iron

  1. The disease which is caused due to the deficiency of iron is Anaemia.
  2. This disease leads to the lack of healthy red blood cells present in the blood and can be overcome by eating green leafy vegetables and fruits.
  3. It is a non contagious and non communicable disease in which the amount of RBC is not enough in the blood.
