Question

Name the electromagnetic spectrum which cause greenhouse effect.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Sun gives out UV, infrared and visible radiation that is received by the earth.
  2. The incoming solar energy from the sun is redirected back towards space by the atmosphere and clouds.
  3. Then some of the solar energy gets absorbed by the atmosphere and clouds.
  4. The remaining energy gets absorbed by the earth’s surface making it warm. This energy then gets converted into heat.
  5. Now once this heat gets absorbed by the earth’s surface, it is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere.
  6. This adds to the increase in the earth’s temperature. This effect is called the greenhouse effect.
  7. The greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere absorb more of the infrared radiations as compared to UV, X and radio waves,

Thus, the spectrum of infrared rays causes the greenhouse effect.
