Question

Name the element which has the highest ionization potential.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Ionization energy:-

  1. It is the energy required to remove an electron from the valence shell of an atom in its isolated gaseous state.
  2. Ionisation energy increases across a period from left to right due to smaller atomic sizes and decreases down the group.

Part 2: Element with the highest ionization potential

  • Helium has the highest ionization potential.
  • This is because Helium has 2 electrons and is in a duplet state.
  • Electrons here are more close to the nucleus, as a result, it would need a lot of energy to remove an electron from it.

Thus, Helium(He) is the element that has the highest ionization potential.
