The pancreas is an abdominal organ. It plays a key role in transforming the food we consume into fuel for the cells of the body. There are two primary functions of the pancreas: an exocrine function that helps digestion and an endocrine function that controls blood sugar. The pancreatic endocrine element comprises of islet cells (Langerhans islets) that directly produce and release significant hormones into the bloodstream. Two of the most important pancreatic hormones are insulin, which reduces blood sugar, and glucagon, which increases blood sugar. Maintaining adequate concentrations of blood sugar is essential for the functioning of important organs including the brain, liver and kidneys
