Solution

Essential elements that activate or inhibit enzymes

  1. For appropriate growth, metabolism, and reproduction, essential components are necessary.
  2. They serve as structural elements within biomolecules.
  3. They are also cofactors and are required for enzyme activity.
  4. These elements have the ability to either activate or inhibit an enzyme.

Example:

  1. Mg2+ activates RuBisCO and PEP carboxylase, which are necessary for carbon fixation during photosynthesis in C3 and C4 plants.
  2. Carboxylases, alcohol dehydrogenase, and carboxypeptidase are all activated by Zn2+
  3. Iron activates the catalase enzyme.
  4. Mn activates several photosynthesis, respiration, and nitrogen metabolism enzymes.
  5. Mo activates nitrogenase.
