Question

Name the factors in Doppler effect on which the change in frequency depends.

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Doppler effect

  1. The Doppler effect or Doppler shift is the change in frequency of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source.
  2. The main reason for the Doppler effect is that when the source of the waves is moving towards the observer, each successive wave crest is emitted from a position closer to the observer than the crest of the previous wave.
  3. Hence, each wave takes slightly less time to reach the observer than the previous wave.
  4. Mathematically, f0=v+v0v+vsfs

Where f0= observer frequency of sound, v=speed of sound waves,v0=observer velocity,vs=source velocity, fs=actual frequency of sound waves.

Step2: Change in frequency dependence in doppler's effect

The change in frequency generally depends on the following:

  1. Velocities of the source and the observer
  2. Source and the observer's relative velocities.
  3. Whether the source and the observer are in motion.
  4. The velocity of the medium.

Thus, the frequency depends on the above-listed factors in Doppler's effect.
