Solution

(a) Sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid are obtained by dissolving sulphur dioxide and chlorine in water.
SO2 + 2H2O + Cl2 → H2SO4 + 2HCl
(b) The commonly used catalyst in the contact process is platinum or vanadium pentaoxide. Because platinum is more costly, vanadium pentaoxide is preferred.
(c) Oleum (H2S2O7 ) is obtained by dissolving sulphur trioxide in 98% sulphuric acid.

SO3+ H2SO4 → H2S2O7

(d) On treating zinc with dilute sulphuric acid, zinc sulphate (ZnSO4 ) is formed.

Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2

(e) On treating ferrous sulphide with dilute sulphuric acid, ferrous sulphate and hydrogen sulphide are formed.

FeS + H2SO4 → FeSO4 + H2S

(f) On treating aqueous lead nitrate with dilute sulphuric acid, an insoluble lead sulphate is obtained as the precipitate.

Pb(NO3)2 + H2SO4 → PbSO4↓ + 2HNO3

(g) On treating aqueous barium chloride with dilute sulphuric acid, barium sulphate is obtained as the precipitate.

BaCl2 + H2SO4 → BaSO4↓ + 2HCl

(h) On treating carbon with hot concentrated sulphuric acid, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide are formed.

C + 2H2SO4 → 2H2O + 2SO2 + CO2

(i) The non-volatile property of concentrated sulphuric acid is used to prepare HCl and HNO3 from H2SO4.

KCl + conc.H2SO4 →<2000C KHSO4 + HClKNO3 + conc.H2SO4 →<2000C KHSO4 + HNO3
