Question

Name the following: A transition metal that undergoes maximum corrosion.

Open in App
Solution

Transition elements: Transition elements are those that have partially filled d-orbitals. The elements belonging to Group 3-12 are all considered transition elements.

For Example- Scandium (Sc), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Rhodium (Rh), Palladium (Pd).

Reason for Iron being most corrosive:

The transition element that corrodes easily is Iron (Fe). When Iron comes in contact with air (oxygen) and moisture, a layer of iron (III) oxide Fe2O3 is formed. As this layer is too porous, it does not even protect the iron from further rusting.

Iron is the metal that forms two types of ions that are Fe2+and Fe3+Therefore, Iron undergoes maximum corrosion.

Hence, a transition metal that undergoes maximum corrosion is Iron (Fe).
