Solution

Xylem:

  1. Xylem is the complex conducting tissue formed from more than one type of cell.
  2. Xylem is present in all parts of a plant like a stem, roots and leaves.
  3. The main function of the xylem is the conduction of water and minerals from the roots upwards to the leaves.
  4. Xylem is basically composed of 4 structures- vessels, tracheids, xylem fibers and xylem parenchyma.
  5. Vessels are a series of long tube-like dead cells joined end to end. They are the main cells of xylem.
  6. Tracheids are long, narrow dead cells tapering at the ends.
  7. Xylem fibres are thin fibre-like dead cells with thick cell walls.
  8. Xylem parenchyma are the only living cells associated with xylem.
  9. Thus, vessels, tracheids, xylem fibers and xylem parenchyma are different cells that make up the xylem tissue.
