Name the following:
(i)A parasitic plant with a yellow, slender and tubular stem.
(ii)A plant that has both autotrophic and heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
(iii)The pores through which leaves exchange gases.
(i)Cuscuta-Cuscuta is a parasitic plant that feeds on other plants.∙It lacks chlorophyll and hence is unable to produce its own sustenance through photosynthesis. Instead, it grows on other plants, consuming their nutrients and weakening the host plant in the process. It has a golden, slender, tubular stem and is an example of a parasitic plant.
(ii)Pitcher plant- Autotrophs are organisms that can prepare food themselves whereas heterotrophs are organisms that take in ready-made food prepared by the plants. Some of the plants have both autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition, they are the Pitcher plant and Venus flytrap.
(iii)The pores through which leave exchange gases are Stomata. They are the small openings present on the inner surface of the leaves. Stomata can be opened and closed. During the night when no photosynthesis takes place, the plant breathes in oxygen and breathes out carbon dioxide through stomata. The plant loses water in the form of vapor through stomata. The loss of water through stomata is called transpiration. Transpiration helps the plant in cooling the leaves.
