  1. Transpiration occurs due to the loss of water from the leaf cells to the intercellular spaces which develops into negative water potential.
  2. This negative potential creates a negative pressure which exerts an upward pull over the water column.
  3. The adhesion-cohesion (water molecules remain joined) forces of water create this pull.
  4. Thus, water is moved upward along with minerals from roots to aerial parts of the body which is called the ascent of sap.

So, the ascent of sap occurs in tall trees, through the process of transpirational pull.
