Menstruation is the normal vaginal bleeding that occurs if pregnancy fails to occur. The permanent stoppage of menstruation at about the age of 45 years in a female is known as menopause.
After the development of menopause, the primordial follicle of the ovary fails to respond to the pituitary gonadotropins, and Graafian follicles do not develop. Ovulation does not take place and the woman never attains pregnancy after the coitus.
