Placenta

  1. The placenta is defined as a mechanical and physiological connection between the developing embryo or foetus and the mother.
  2. The outer surface of the chorion develops a number of finger-like projections, called chorionic villi which grow into the tissue of the uterus.
  3. These villi penetrate the tissue of the uterine wall in which they are embedded, making up the placenta.
