  1. After fertilization the zygote develops into the embryo, the ovule grows into a seed and the ovary forms a fruit.
  2. Fruits are composed of 2 portions- Pericarp and seed.
  3. The pericarp layer is formed from the ovary and consists of three layers:
  • Exocarp or Epicarp- Outermost layer which forms the skin of the fruit.
  • Mesocarp- Fleshy, juicy middle part of the fruit
  • Endocarp- Hard, innermost layer of the fruit which encloses the seed.
  • The hard, innermost layer of the fruit that encloses the seed is endocarp.
