Name the four characteristics of root for absorbing.

Open in App
Solution

Root : The roots are branched parts at the lower end of the plant. They fix the plant in soil (anchorage). They help plants to absorb water and minerals from the soil.

Following are the characteristics of roots for absorption:

  1. Extensive root hair with rapid growth: Plants have an extensive root system that grows rapidly in soil.
  2. Large surface area: The surface area of roots is enormous because of the presence of root hairs. This increases the absorption of water by the roots.
  3. Thin walls of root hairs: Root hairs present at the tip of the root are thin-walled extensions of the outer walls of epidermal cells of the root. The vacuoles are surrounded by a cell wall and cell membrane.
  4. High concentrated solution: In root hair vacuole, some salts are dissolved in it therefore root hair cells have high concentrated cell sap than surrounding water. This character is important for osmosis.
