Four types of bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle are

  1. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria - It converts the gaseous form of nitrogen from the atmosphere to a solid form. ex - Azotobacter and Rhizobium.
  2. Putrefying bacteria - It is involved in the putrefaction of living organisms. It is also involved ammonification. ex - Bacillus and Streptomyces.
  3. Nitrifying bacteria - It converts the ammonia into nitrites and further into nitrates. ex- Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter.
  4. Denitrifying bacteria - It decomposes nitrates and creates free atmosphere nitrogen from the roots. ex - Pseudomonas and Clostridium.
